EAA Recalls Fallen Blue Angels Pilot

EAA expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Lt. Cmdr. Kevin "Kojak" Davis, a pilot for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team, who was killed in a flight accident during a performance at Beaufort, S.C., on Saturday.

Davis, 32, was a special guest at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh last summer and met many attendees during his two-day appearance with his jet on display at AeroShell Square. He also flew VIP flights during his appearance at AirVenture, including flights with actor Harrison Ford, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards and country music star Aaron Tippin.

Saturday's accident occurred as the six-jet team was performing its final maneuver during an air show at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, about 35 miles northwest of Hilton Head Island, S.C. Witnesses report that the plane clipped a stand of pine trees before it went down just outside, but Navy investigators said it could be three weeks or more before it announces what caused the crash.

EAA President Tom Poberezny visits with Kevin Davis at AeroShell Square at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2006.

Davis, a native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, graduated with honors in 1996 from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida. He joined the Navy in 1996 and graduated from the "TOPGUN" flight training school. Davis served extended tours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the North Arabian Sea and Arabian Gulf. He joined the Blue Angels in September 2005 and had accumulated more than 2,500 flight hours including 200 carrier landings. Before becoming one of the six Blue Angels performance pilots, he handled VIP flights and narration duties for the team, which had just celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Davis is survived by his parents, John and Ann Davis.
