
EAA, AIRVENTURE LOSE A UNIQUE VOICE

June 23, 2005 - Long-time EAA member and EAA Communication Center “Green Gang” volunteer Bill Ricketts, EAA 17014, passed away on Tuesday evening, June 21, following a battle with lung cancer. To thousands of EAA AirVenture campers, volunteers, and assorted early arrivers, Bill will be remembered as the “Baltimore Oriole,” or simply as the “Yodeler” who for many years ending his overnight shift by performing his unique style of yodeling, bright and early each day at 7 a.m. The morning yodel became one of the enduring traditions at EAA AirVenture.
A former high school teacher in Baltimore County, Maryland, Bill volunteered at Oshkosh each summer for a quarter century. He was featured prominently in the October 2004 issue of EAA Sport Aviation, where he provided the following poem: “All the best in life’s the simplest/Love will last when life is gone/Just be glad you’re living/And keep cheering someone on.”
Bill is survived by his wife, Shirley. There will be a memorial service at the Carroll County (Maryland) Airport on Sunday, July 10.
